Issue:

May a Judicial Official financially contribute to a legal aid society that has attorneys who may appear before the Judicial Official?

Response:

Based upon the facts presented, the Committee unanimously agreed that contributions to a legal aid organization are permissible in accordance with Canon 5(b) and that disclosure of such contributions generally is not required unless the amount of the contribution is such that the Judicial Official’s impartiality might reasonably be questioned under Canon 3.
