SKAKEL MEDIA ADVISORY

Superior Court Judge John F. Kavanewsky today set the schedule for the trial in the case of State of Connecticut vs. Michael Skakel.

Jury selection will begin on April 2, 2002. The presentation of evidence will begin on May 7, 2002, if jury selection is concluded by that date. The court location is yet to be determined. These dates were chosen after consultation with the attorneys. They are by agreement and there is no objection to the dates.

Media organizations wishing to cover the jury selection and/or the remainder of the trial should fax a request on company letterhead to Rhonda Stearley-Hebert, External Affairs, Connecticut Judicial Branch, at 860-757-2215. The name of the reporter or sketch artist must be provided. Please include a fax number with your request, and please note that requests submitted for prior proceedings in this case are no longer valid. Fax transmissions may be sent at any time of day from the time of the release of this advisory until Friday, March 1, 2002 at 5 p.m. No extensions or exceptions to this deadline will be considered.

News organizations must commit to day-to-day coverage of the trial after the jury is empanelled; otherwise they may lose their seat. Reporters from Connecticut daily newspapers, television, and radio stations will receive pre-assigned seats, as will the Connecticut Bureau of the Associated Press, the Connecticut Bureau of The New York Times, and The Connecticut Law Tribune. However, Connecticut organizations still must fax a letter of request and commit to daily coverage of the trial portion. Please note that seats will be reserved for family members of the victim and defendant, counsel, court officials, and the public.

If the number of media requests does not exceed the available seating, all such requests will be granted. If the number of requests exceeds the seating capacity, media representatives must pool in each of the following categories: print media includes daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, and books), television, radio, and sketch artists.

Notification of receipt and acceptance of requests will be announced by fax and on the Judicial Branch website, www.jud.ct.gov. In case of any changes in the scheduling of this matter, notices will be posted on the website and faxed to the media. The media should be alert to such changes and check the Branch's website for updates.
