Chief Justice McDonald's Portrait Scheduled for Unveiling
The Connecticut Judicial Branch
will honor the Hon. Francis M. McDonald, former Chief Justice of the
Connecticut Supreme Court, with an unveiling of his portrait on Wednesday,
January 22, 2003, in the Supreme Court courtroom. Chief Justice William J.
Sullivan will preside over the 4 p.m. ceremony, while former Supreme Court
Justice, Robert I. Berdon, and Justice McDonald's three children (Michael J.
McDonald, Mary Ann McDonald Carolan and John K. McDonald) will deliver
remarks.
The portrait was painted by
Woodbury artist Rebecca Rosow. Justice McDonald and his wife, Mary, first
learned of Ms. Rosow's work in the summer of 2001, when she had an
exhibition of her portraits and landscapes in Woodbury. Her work also has
been exhibited at the Cork Gallery at Lincoln Center, the National Academy
of Design, the Gunn Memorial Library in Washington, Connecticut, and the
Washington Art Association, where she is a member.
"Justice McDonald served the
Judicial Branch and Connecticut's citizens with distinction," said Chief
Justice Sullivan. "In his many years of service to the courts, he conducted
himself with honesty, integrity and compassion."
A Connecticut native, Justice
McDonald graduated from Holy Cross College with an A.B. in 1953, and from
the Yale University Law School with an L.L.B. in 1956. He was admitted to
the Connecticut Bar in 1956.
From 1957 until 1958, he was a
Special Agent for the FBI. He served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the
District of Connecticut from 1958 to 1960; as Deputy Chief Prosecuting
Attorney for the Connecticut Circuit Courts from 1965 until 1968; and as
State's Attorney for the Waterbury Judicial District from 1968 to1984.
Former Governor William A.
O'Neill appointed Justice McDonald to the bench in 1984. He served as a
Superior Court Judge until 1996, when Governor John G. Rowland appointed him
as an Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court. He was sworn in as
Connecticut's Chief Justice in October 1999, and remained in that position
until his retirement in January of 2001.
