Twenty-Seven
New Judicial Marshals Set to Graduate
Twenty-seven
judicial marshals are scheduled to graduate on Tuesday, June
8, 2004. Of the group, eight will report to the New Haven
Judicial District; seven to Waterbury.
The ceremony will
start at 2 p.m. at the Supreme Court courtroom, located at 231
Capitol Ave. in Hartford, and last an hour. Cameras will be
allowed.
"We’re
extremely pleased that nearly 30 judicial marshals are coming
on board," Chief Court Administrator Joseph H. Pellegrino
said. "We have thousands of individuals who go through
our courts every year, and the judicial marshal is the first
person they encounter inside of the courthouse. That gives you
an idea of how vital the job is."
And in a post-9/11
world, Judge Pellegrino said, courthouse security is more
important than ever. "The vigilance of our judicial
marshals is essential to maintaining safety, both for the
public and the state employees who work in the
courthouses," he added.
Besides New Haven
and Waterbury, four other judicial districts will receive
graduates: Stamford–Norwalk, five; Ansonia-Milford, four;
Tolland, two; and Danbury, one. Assignments are based on the
operational needs of a particular judicial district.
Judicial marshals
became part of the Judicial Branch in December 2000, when the
responsibility for court security, custody of prisoners and
prisoner transportation was transferred to the Branch.
Candidates for the job must pass a physical exam and agility
screening, a drug screen, and a criminal background check.
They then must complete a six-week training program at the
Judicial Marshal Academy in New Britain.
