The daylong event will take place at the Legislative Office Building, Hartford, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Other activities will include workshops, performances by various musical groups and the presentation of the Judicial Branch’s Diversity Awards.

About 170 Judicial Branch employees registered for the event. Friday marks the second time the Branch has held Diversity Day; the first occurred in 2002.

"Diversity Day is a great way to celebrate the diversity of the Judicial Branch’s work force," Chief Court Administrator Joseph H. Pellegrino said. "Equally important is the educational component – no one is going to walk away without learning something they didn’t know previously."

Judge Pellegrino credited the Branch’s Affirmative Action Employee Advisory Committee with putting together Friday’s schedule.

Deputy Chief Court Administrator Thomas F. Parker will serve as master of ceremonies. Judge Pellegrino will provide welcoming remarks.

Later in the morning, Appellate Court Judge Alexandra D. DiPentima will present the Judicial Branch Diversity Awards, which recognize employees who have improved services to the public by promoting a better understanding of the needs of a diverse citizenry. The employees are: Phyllis Cummings-Texeira, a supervisor in the Stamford Family Services office, and Elsa "Iris" Rosario, who works as a judicial marshal in the Hartford Judicial District.

Workshops will be held throughout the afternoon, starting at 1:30 and lasting until 3:15. They will include:

  • Diversity in Religion with the Rev. Alvan Johnson Jr.
  • Teaching Tolerance with Iris Branch
  • Society and Aging with Roxanne Aaron-Selph and Julie Evans-Star
  • Your Communication Style with Joseph R. Gugliotti
  • When Poetry Happens … and What to Do About It" with Bessy Reyna
  • The event is open to the news media. For information, please contact Rhonda Stearley-Hebert, manager of communications, at 860-757-2270.
