Norwich JD to Celebrate Judge Tamborra’s Career with Portrait Unveiling

NORWICH – The Norwich Judicial District will honor one of its lifelong residents and dedicated public servants with an unveiling of a portrait of the Hon. Sabino P. Tamborra Wednesday, August 2, in the Arraignment Courtroom. The Hon. Susan B. Handy, Administrative Judge, will preside over the 9 a.m. ceremony while former Supreme Court Justice Angelo G. Santaniello will deliver remarks. A reception will follow.

The portrait was painted by Norwich artist Sarah Stifler Lucas, who also painted the portrait of Judge Santaniello, which hangs in the third floor foyer of the New London JD.

"Judge Tamborra is a crown jewel of the community," said Judge Santaniello. "In his service to the courts, he conducted himself with compassion, great sensitivity and tremendous fairness. He has served the State of Connecticut with distinction as an outstanding jurist, he is a loving and caring father and husband and a perfectly wonderful human being."

A Norwich native, Judge Tamborra, 74, attended Norwich Free Academy then, upon graduation, entered the Army Air Force where he served from 1945-47. Following military duty, he attended the University of Connecticut, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1951. He earned his Juris Doctor, with honors, from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1954.

Judge Tamborra was appointed a Superior Court Judge on August 3, 1979 by then Governor Ella T. Grasso and was sworn in on August 24, 1979. In his 21 years as a Judge, he spent most of his time in the New London Judicial District, with brief assignments as Presiding Judge at the East Hartford, Hartford and Manchester G.A.s. Judge Tamborra became a Judge Trial Referee in December 1996.

Prior to his appointment to the bench, he was corporate counsel for the City of Norwich from 1969-71 and assistant prosecutor in Norwich City Court from 1955-60.
