Chief Court Administrator Pellegrino Appoints Judge Gruendel Chief Administrative Judge for the Family Division of the Superior Court

HARTFORD - Chief Court Administrator Joseph H. Pellegrino announced today that he has appointed the Hon. F. Herbert Gruendel to the office of Chief Administrative Judge for the Family Division of the Superior Court, effective immediately.

Judge Gruendel replaces the Hon. Anne C. Dranginis, who was elevated to the Appellate Court by Governor Rowland late last year.

"As Presiding Judge over the Family Division in the Hartford Judicial District, Judge Gruendel has exhibited the ability to handle sensitive matters affecting families and children with compassion and fairness," said Judge Pellegrino. "I look forward to working with him in the future."

"The judges who hear family cases here in Connecticut are extraordinary," said Judge Gruendel. "They are dedicated to helping the people who appear before them deal with some of life's most difficult situations. I am honored to have the opportunity to work with them for the families of our state."

Judge Gruendel was a public school principal and teacher before attending the University of Connecticut School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor with honors in 1984. He earned his A.B. in English Literature from Drew University in 1969, a M.A. in American Studies from the University of Maryland in 1971, a M.A. in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974 and a M.Ed. in Educational Administration from Rutgers University in 1976.

From 1983-84 he participated in a mid-career fellowship at the Bush Center for Child Development and Social Policy at Yale University, where he conducted research in juvenile law. He was admitted to the Connecticut Bar in 1984, and was in private practice at the New Haven firm of Jacobs, Grudberg, Belt & Dow, P.C., from 1984 until his appointment as Superior Court Judge in May 1998.
