Pilot Probation Programs Show Very Promising Results

Preliminary findings of two pilot probation programs developed by the Judicial Branch are yielding very promising results, according to a study done by Central Connecticut State University.

The Branch’s Court Support Services Division (CSSD) developed the two programs – the Probation Transition Program and the Technical Violation Unit – 15 months ago. Branch officials implemented these programs in accordance with CT Public Act 04-234 Sec. 26(a).

The two programs began in October 2004. The Probation Transition Program (PTP) is in place in Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven, New London and Waterbury. It targets inmates who have terms of probation following their discharge from the state Department of Correction. The Technical Violation Unit (TVU) is in six locations – Bridgeport, Hartford, New Britain, New Haven, New London and Waterbury – and is intended to reduce the number of probationers sentenced to incarceration because of technical probation violations with the ultimate goal of reducing the prison population.
