What information about school suspensions may be disclosed and to whom?

Within 24-hours of a student's suspension, school administration must notify the superintendent or a designee of the student's suspension and the reason for the suspension.38 In addition, notice of a student's suspension and the conduct resulting in the student's suspension must be included in the student’s educational record, and therefore may be disclosed subject to the provisions of FERPA. This information may be expunged at a later date by the board of education in certain circumstances.39

Boards of education are required to submit information to the Commissioner of Education on expulsions for the possession of weapons, pursuant to the Gun-Free Schools Act of 1994.41
