ACCESS TO INFORMATION IN JUVENILE COURT PROCEEDINGS
LEGAL GUIDE – STUDENTS’ ON-CAMPUS CRIMINAL CONDUCT

Under FERPA, some records are not considered educational records and therefore FERPA protections do not apply. Information related to a student’s criminal conduct, such as records created and maintained by school law enforcement units and reports of criminal activity on a school campus is not confidential under FERPA.

Under Connecticut law, school principals are required to report physical assaults upon school employees by students to local police.36 School employees have a right to file a complaint with local police when they are threatened with violence or physically assaulted.37
