2023 Law Day Contest
The Connecticut Supreme Court Historical Society is pleased to announce its annual Law Day celebration and its written entry or art/song/video competition for high school students. This year's Law Day theme is "Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility, and Collaboration." As explained by the ABA: "In recent years, tensions in our democratic system have revealed deep divisions in American society. These divisions are aggravated by incivility in public discourse and insufficient understanding among many people about the Constitution and the way American government works. Together, however, we can collaborate to overcome our differences, resolve our disputes, and preserve our democracy and republic." The submission deadline for the contest is April 17, 2023; additional information and entry forms are in the linked documents.

The Connecticut Supreme Court Historical Society is proud to
announce the winners of its annual Law Day Art and Essay Contest. High school students
from across Connecticut were asked to prepare artwork or essays addressing the following
topic: "One hundred years after the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, what obstacles
still remain for citizens seeking to exercise their right to vote, and how do we surmount
them?" This year's essay winner is Christopher D'Inzeo, a senior at West Haven High School,
for "Obstacles to Voting and Some Possible Solutions." This year's artwork winner is Jenna
Henk, a junior at Norwich Free Academy, for "The Growth and Obstructions of Voting." Each
of our winners has received a scholarship prize, and we look forward to recognizing them at
a ceremony to be held before the Supreme Court.

Statement of Chief Justice Chase T. Rogers
Justice Peter T. Zarella
I will miss Justice Peter T. Zarella as a colleague, a scholar and a judge wholly committed to the rule of law.
Whether it was in Rockville, where he served as a Superior Court judge, at the Appellate Court or on the Supreme Court, Justice Zarella's
judicial philosophy is simple: he follows the law of the state of Connecticut and the constitutions of the United States and Connecticut.
A voracious learner, Justice Zarella's meticulous research skills are evident in all of his opinions. At the same time, he rightly views
every case as different and of great importance to the parties involved. Justice Zarella is especially instrumental in his current role as
the Administrative Judge of the Appellate System, where he has led the successful effort to implement e-filing for the Supreme and Appellate
Courts. He also is a very effective ambassador in educating people about the courts and specifically, the role of the appellate courts.
He is active with the Judicial Branch's Speakers Bureau and also was the founder of the Supreme Court Historical Society. Moreover, he
refashioned the Attorney Swearing-In ceremonies, so that they are more meaningful to new attorneys and their families. These are but a
small sampling of the activities he has been involved with over his 20-year judicial career. On a personal note, I consider Justice Zarella
a true friend and will miss our spirited discussions regarding the law. I wish Justice Zarella nothing but the best as he begins this new journey.
