"Opening
Our Doors" Program
WATERBURY – The Judicial Branch, as part of its
Opening Our
Doors tour program, is sponsoring a presentation Friday, Oct. 12,
2001, on two unique dockets in Waterbury -- one dealing with complex
litigation, the other, Community Court.
Members of the Legislative and Executive Branches are invited, along with
the news media. Those interested in attending "The Judicial Branch
Spectrum: From Community Court to Complex Litigation" are asked to
arrive at the Waterbury Courthouse, 400 Grand St., by 9 a.m.
Waterbury's Community Court has been open for a year. The court is
designed to address "quality-of-life" crimes such as public
drinking, petty larcenies, and breach of peace.
Some of Connecticut's most challenging civil cases often are referred to
the complex litigation docket. These lawsuits typically involve multiple
litigants, intricate legal issues or multimillion-dollar claims. As of Aug. 23, 2001, there were 861 complex
litigation cases pending statewide. Besides Waterbury, complex litigation
dockets are available in New Britain, Norwich, Stamford, and Tolland.
The tour is the sixth this year under the 4-year-old
Opening Our
Doors program. Other programs have dealt with the habeas docket, adult probation sex offender
units, jury service, and family violence and family relations.
Members of the news media interested in attending should contact the
Judicial Branch before the event. To RSVP or for information, call Manager
of Communications Rhonda Stearley-Hebert, External Affairs Division,
757-2270.
